Venous

Varicose veins are large veins that can not only be unsightly but can cause discomfort and if left untreated in some instances cause swelling, discoloration and ulceration. Spider veins are smaller veins that are usually harmless but unsightly and can be a sign of venous hypertension which is the original problem that is not visible to the eye. The veins in the legs rely on valves to push the blood back up to the heart. Blood flow back up to the heart in the veins from the legs is a passive process augmented by the leg muscles. The valves within the veins prevent backflow of the blood as the muscles contract. Usually, the problem is damage to the valves within the veins such that the blood moves backwards towards the feet instead of up towards the heart. Over time, it causes venous hypertension and enlargement of the veins that is visually the large varicose veins and smaller spider veins. The pain in the legs is caused by the elevated pressure in the veins that eventually causes swelling. If the swelling is severe enough it causes discoloration of the leg. When the pressure in the legs gets high enough it can cause ulceration from decreased blood flow going to the tissue.

One of the causes of the damage to the valves of the vein include heriditary so if your parents had it you may have it also. Other causes are pregnancy, obesity, blood clots known as deep vein thrombosis and congestive heart failure. Patients who have had heart surgery using leg veins may at times develop venous insufficiency as well.
