With aging, we know that there is stiffening of the arteries.. Similarly, there is thickening of the heart muscle. As the heart stiffens there is abnormality in the relaxation properties. This is a precursor to a type of heart failure. A recent study of healthy seniors > 64 showed that committed exercise regimen of 4 or 5 days of exercise sessions/week throughout adulthood prevented most of the age-related stiffening of the heart seen in the elderly. This type of change seen by ultrasound of the heart is the precursor to “HFpEF” which means heart failure with preserved pumping function.
